Introduction Paragraph-
The Dominican Republic is an island located in the West Indies, and is a Continental island. Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Spain in 1492 calling it Hispaniola. The capital is Santo Domingo and was established in 1496 as the first permanent settlement in the New World. In 1804 the western part of Hispaniola became Haiti as France took over the island. In 1821 the Haitians conquered the whole island but in 1844 the eastern of the island gained independence and officially became the Dominican Republic.
Brief History Paragraph-
Before Columbus discovered the Dominican Republic the island was originally settled by the Native American Tainos, an Arawak people. After Columbus discovered the island the population of the Tainos declined because of the Europeans bringing over diseases like smallpox.
Cool and Interesting Paragraph-
The Dominican Republic is 48,730 square miles, which is just about twice the size of New Hampshire. The island has 800 miles of coastline with beautiful beaches and warm water. The major industries in the Dominican Republic are tourism, tobacco and sugar processing. Over 8.4 million people live in the Dominican Republic and many famous sports player were born there such as Al Horford, David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez. The Dominican peso is the currency.
